Longer Than Suspected

Okay, I’m going to tell you a little secret… government has been watching you for much longer than you even suspect. How do I know? Back in the early 1970’s, I went to an Indianapolis bookstore and purchased two books (still have them). But, before I could leave with the books, I had to leave my name, address and phone number with the bookstore owner. Now, this was before direct marketing campaigns by shop owners or computers on storeowner checkout counters. No, it was a simple index card that I needed to complete as part of the purchase process. What two books prompted such a reaction you ask? I bought The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx and Four Essays on Philosophy Mao Bookby Mao Tse-Tung.

I have always been curious. I have always wanted to know about other faiths, cultures and – yes, governing philosophies. Must have been that education I received in good old Frankfort, Indiana. At the time, I really did not understand exactly what I was giving up. Now, I do. And, here we are today – a country terrified and seemingly more than willing to give up our right to privacy to “feel” safe. (Sixty-two percent of participants said it was more important to allow the government to search for possible terrorist threats even if it meant giving up their privacy, while only 34% prioritize privacy over investigating terrorist threats – Pew and Washington Post). I’M NOT WILLING – I WANT MY PRIVACY BACK! I want it back from my employer, my insurer, my doctor and businesses who want to sell me something. But, more than any other, I want my privacy back from my government!

What a long and slippery slope we have traveled since a curious teenager bought two books!
